born again..huh?
The phrase “born again” can be a bit confusing to people who don’t understand the real meaning behind it. No, I did not crawl into my mother’s womb and come back out (which I have actually been asked). And yes, I believe that the second time I was born was better than the first, but that’s just me. In reality, the phrase is short and sweet, but it still can bring confusion.
So let’s put this into terms that maybe everyone can understand. Let’s just say that you have to write a paper for class, a reaction to a poem maybe a review of a play by Shakespeare. Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, right? Well, if you don’t, here’s a quick synopsis. Boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl realize their families hate each other, [uh oh], girl drinks potion that makes her look dead, boy thinks she’s dead, so of course he commits suicide (this is why we don’t make brash decisions boys and girls) because girl wakes up, sees that boy is dead and off she goes to join him.
So, why did I feel the need to tell that story? Well if your teacher asks you for a review of Romeo and Juliet and you happen to say, “well it was kind of dramatic,” naturally your teacher is going to ask you to show it in the play. In other words, go to the source.
This would follow suite with something else simple in life that we have all encountered. Like getting directions somewhere (and we know guys, you hate to ask..makes you look “unmanly” and such, but that’s a whole other discussion). Before everyone had GPS or navigation in their phones or run through their car, they had a map. If you wanted the right directions, you would go to the most reliable source, the map.
See where I’m going with this?
So, if I am a believer, which I am, and I am witnessing to someone, like I am doing to you right now, I would want to back up my information and my comments with the most reliable source, right? Just like every English teacher I have ever had would want, I’m sure you want to know where I got my information.
Now, if you are not a believer or think you believe but are not (oh here’s that phrase that you all are so freaked out by!) born again, then not only am I going to back up my information from my source, but I would think that if you need directions on getting to where your going you would want to check it out, too. I mean, it’s (the Bible) only been on the best seller list since one was started and has sold an estimated 6 billion or slightly more copies. I would have to say that I would pick that life directional up before any other one, I mean that’s how we pick out everything in life right? The ratings that the “public” gives it. Well, the public has picked this one, and by a heck of a majority.
So, now I am going to get back to the point of this. I was once asked, why is it called born again? So I went to my source, and I found my answer:
“In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” -John 3:3
So there you have it, just as much as you trust every other book or magazine you peer your eyes into, trust one that was written to benefit you, glorify him and save us for eternity. God Bless.
